The Payback book was founded in 2001 on a simple two part philosophy:
  • to help local schools raise (much needed) money – with an easy and profitable fundraiser.
  • to offer area merchants a NO FEE, “neighborhood marketing” strategy – one that also helps in their goal of supporting their community.
Paybacks founder, Ted Shamp, spent 12 years with Entertainment Publications, (publishers of the Entertainment and Gold C coupon books) most recently as Regional Manager – Fundraising Division – Western Region.

Upon leaving his position with Entertainment, Ted saw the need for a discount book that served small towns – or “bedroom communities”. A book that helped families save money at HOME – not after driving a half hour to the nearest city.

In addition, another unique idea was implemented. Payback would give a generous 50% profit ($10 of the $20 purchase price) for every Payback book that a school sells….an unheard of concept in coupon book fundraising (other similar books start at a mere 20% profit).

It was this willingness to develop a true “50/50 partnership” with the local schools - while creating a more local, “home town” book - that led to the success of the first Payback Book market – in Vancouver, Washington.

Now, five years - and hundreds of thousands of dollars raised for Vancouver schools later – the decision to expand the company was made. After much searching, the towns of Boulder County, Colorado were chosen – due to their many schools, active families, growing economy and lively restaurant and shopping scene.
